- Memorial Day travel rush sets new records as travelers head home.
Baltimore had a lot of people traveling for Memorial Day weekend. The Transportation Security Administration checked over 2.95 million airline passengers on Friday, which was a new record for one day. Now, these travelers are returning home. AAA estimated that 43.8 million people would travel at least 50 miles this weekend for the holiday. This Memorial Day weekend is expected to be the busiest at airports since 2005. As of 11 a.m. on Monday, there was only one canceled flight at BWI Airport, but there were 89 delays to and from the airport. Most of the delays, 64 of them, were from Southwest Airlines, and 13 were from Delta. Over 50,000 flights were scheduled on Thursday and Friday, the busiest days for travel this weekend. So, there will likely be crowds and long wait times as people head back home today. TSA mentioned that five of its top 10 busiest days ever were this month, showing that travel is increasing as summer nears. If you are driving home today or going to the airport to catch a flight, AAA suggests avoiding the road from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. This is when you will face the most traffic and longest wait times. The Memorial Day travel rush has not been smooth as millions of Americans travel by road and air.
