Story

AVONDALE, Pa. (CBS) – Heavy rainfall from the east branch of the White Clay Creek caused significant flooding at the Avondale Apartments, with water rapidly inundating the first floor overnight. Resident Dawn Clark recounted the swift rise of the floodwaters, noting that within 30 minutes, the situation escalated from manageable to critical, prompting urgent evacuations. "By 4:30, it was up to the back steps," she said, highlighting the urgency of the response. In the wake of the flooding, local organizations mobilized to assist affected residents. The American Red Cross, in collaboration with the Chester County Office of Emergency Management and The Garage Community and Youth Center, established a shelter for those displaced by the disaster. The shelter provided a safe haven for 44 individuals overnight, offering meals, emotional support, and essential items to help families cope with the aftermath of the flooding. Clark expressed gratitude that no injuries were reported, emphasizing the importance of life over material possessions. "Material things you can do without, but a life you can't replace," she stated, reflecting the resilience of the community in the face of adversity. Chester County OEM is currently assessing the damage caused by the flooding and is working diligently to facilitate the return of families to their homes. As recovery efforts continue, the community remains united in support of those affected by this natural disaster.
