BURLINGTON – A retired Burlington police officer was seriously injured on Wednesday when a 75-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle, striking the officer while he was working a construction detail. The incident occurred when the driver’s Chevy Equinox unexpectedly jumped the curb, hitting former Sgt. Timothy Kirchner, who had recently retired after 32 years of service. Following his retirement in June, Kirchner continues to serve as a reserve officer for the department. Witnesses reported that the impact caused Kirchner to become airborne, landing on top of the SUV. Another officer on the scene quickly responded, assisting the driver in stopping the vehicle and helping Kirchner, who was injured in the collision. The second officer sustained minor cuts and scrapes but did not require hospitalization. Kirchner was transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, where he is being treated for serious injuries to his arm, elbow, and leg. The condition of the retired officer remains a concern for the community and his colleagues. As of now, it remains unclear whether the driver will face any charges related to the incident. Burlington police have not released additional information, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing. The community is rallying in support of Kirchner during this challenging time.
