Story

Cineworld has presented a proposed £35 million funding plan to its creditors as they prepare to vote on a crucial restructuring plan next month. The investment, contingent on court approval, aims to support capital expenditures, including the refurbishment of viable cinema locations. However, the plan has raised concerns, as its approval could lead to the closure of up to a dozen Cineworld sites, adding to the six closures already confirmed in July. The restructuring documents indicate that approximately 50 additional Cineworld locations require landlords to agree to revised rent agreements to remain operational. The company has acknowledged its financial struggles, stating it lacked "sufficient funding" to cover a quarterly rent bill of £15.9 million due on June 24. A spokesperson for Cineworld emphasized that the restructuring plan is essential for securing further funding to address working capital needs, reduce liabilities, and initiate a significant capital expenditure program. Cineworld operates around 100 sites in the UK and the Republic of Ireland under the Cineworld and Picturehouse brands, employing approximately 4,400 people. Globally, the chain manages around 750 locations. The cinema industry is facing intensified competition from streaming services, adding pressure to Cineworld's financial situation as it navigates these restructuring efforts. The outcome of the creditor vote at the end of September will be pivotal for the future of the cinema chain.
