Story

AUSTIN – Steve McCraw, the long-serving director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), revealed his retirement plans during a graduation ceremony for DPS trooper trainees on Friday. The announcement, made in the presence of Governor Greg Abbott, took many by surprise. McCraw expressed confidence in his successor, stating, "I know Gov. Greg Abbott will ensure my replacement is as good or likely better than I am at this particular job." Governor Abbott praised McCraw's leadership, calling him a "visionary" and a quintessential figure in Texas law enforcement. McCraw has held the director position for 15 years, a tenure marked by significant events, including the tragic 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Initially, McCraw commended the law enforcement response, but subsequent revelations indicated that officers, including 13 DPS troopers, delayed confronting the shooter for over an hour. In the wake of the Uvalde incident, McCraw faced pressure from victims' families to resign but maintained his position, previously stating he would step down if his agency bore any responsibility. His career with the DPS began in 1977, followed by over two decades with the FBI. McCraw transitioned to Texas homeland security in 2004 before assuming the role of DPS director in 2009, leaving a complex legacy as he prepares to step down at the end of the year.
