Story

BUTTE COUNTY — A man has been charged with reckless arson in connection with the Park Fire that erupted in Northern California. During his initial court appearance on Monday, the accused, identified as Stout, faced multiple enhancements related to the charges. According to the Butte County District Attorney's Office, witnesses reported seeing Stout pushing a burning vehicle into a gully near Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park, which allegedly contributed to the spread of the fire. District Attorney Mike Ramsey detailed the investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol, which revealed that the vehicle was in neutral when Stout attempted to maneuver it off the road. Ramsey stated that Stout's actions, including revving the engine while the car was engulfed in flames, were reckless and led to the ignition of nearby grass. Stout, however, contends that the incident was accidental and denies pushing the flaming vehicle down the gully. With a prior criminal history, Stout faces significant legal repercussions if found guilty. Ramsey noted that this incident could count as a third strike, potentially leading to a sentence of 25 years to life if it is determined that the fire caused serious bodily injury or death. Additionally, Stout's blood alcohol content was reported to be above the legal limit at the time of his arrest, and Ramsey emphasized that intoxication is not a valid defense against arson charges. Stout did not enter a plea during the hearing, and no bail was set. A continued arraignment is scheduled for August 1.
