A Minnesota detective's vigilant monitoring of a crime-ridden chatroom led to the arrest of Gavin Plumb, a 37-year-old man from the U.K., who plotted to stalk and murder popular television personality Holly Willoughby. Operating under the alias "David Nelson," the detective uncovered Plumb's violent intentions, which included plans to kidnap and kill Willoughby. Owatonna Police Chief Jeff Mundale emphasized the detective's creative engagement in online chats and commitment to covert investigations as key factors in identifying the threat. Upon recognizing the imminent danger to Willoughby, the detective promptly alerted the FBI, which coordinated with London Metropolitan Police and Essex Police. On July 4, U.K. authorities acknowledged the Minnesota officer's crucial undercover work, leading to Plumb's conviction for soliciting Willoughby's murder and planning her kidnapping and rape. The investigation revealed that Plumb had been obsessively plotting the attack since 2021, collaborating with others online and acquiring materials such as metal cable ties and chloroform to facilitate his crime. Plumb's online discussions included a significant exchange in October 2023, during which he unknowingly communicated with the Minnesota detective. His criminal history includes prior convictions for false imprisonment and attempted kidnapping of young women. Following Plumb's conviction, Willoughby expressed her gratitude towards the undercover officer and the swift actions of the police, highlighting the importance of safety for women in their daily lives.
