In recent comments, Microsoft board member Hoffman expressed his hope that Vice President Kamala Harris would retain Lina Khan as chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) if she wins re-election. Hoffman criticized Khan's approach, suggesting she operates "outside the scope" of her role, stating, “Antitrust is fine…Waging war is not.” Despite this, he acknowledged Khan's effectiveness, noting that she has garnered support from some Republican colleagues for her consumer protection efforts. Ohio Senator JD Vance, the GOP vice presidential nominee, has also praised Khan, calling her one of the few competent figures in the Biden administration. However, a Harris campaign aide clarified that there are currently “no policy discussions” regarding Khan's potential replacement. The FTC, under Khan's leadership, has been involved in significant regulatory actions against corporate misconduct, which has drawn mixed reactions from various political factions. Hoffman, while critical of Khan's methods, has voiced concerns about former President Donald Trump's approach to business and the rule of law, suggesting that he would pose a threat to corporate interests. He expressed regret over a previous comment regarding Trump, indicating a desire for more measured discourse. Additionally, Hoffman suggested that it would be “awesome and bold” for Harris to consider a business leader like billionaire Mark Cuban for her ticket, emphasizing the potential benefits of having a business perspective in the administration.
