In a remote area of western Spain, the Comarca de Vératton complex emerged after over ten years of dedication from entrepreneurs Zhelvanava and Muñoz. The project took place in Villanueva de la Vera, in the province of Cáceres, where the custom-built houses are designed to resemble those found in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings saga. The houses, which include distinctive round doors and are embedded in a grassy hillside, serve as a retreat for fans of the famous literary work, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a fantasy-like environment. The inspiration for the architects stemmed from a personal passion for architecture along with stories reminiscent of Tolkien's narrative. Muñoz emphasizes a desire to create spaces that provide a sense of protection, echoing humanity's ancestral connections to nature and cave-dwelling lifestyles. The duo painstakingly sought out a perfect location for their endeavor, avoiding sites marred by power lines or urban sprawls, landing in their ideal spot that boasts breathtaking views of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range. Additionally, the area holds historical significance, being the region where Emperor Charles I of Spain spent his final years in the Monastery of Yuste. The project mirrors this historical depth and engages visitors in both the beauty of nature and the charm of hobbit-style architecture. Each house displays individual characteristics – El Carpintero has a green door, La Costurera features yellow, and El Druida showcases a red door, each reflecting personal aesthetics aligned with Tolkien’s themes. As for future plans, the entrepreneurs will focus on stabilizing their business before considering any expansions. They share that their journey has been a labor of love, stemming from years of imaginative dreaming and camaraderie, often described as a “crazy idea for two geeks.” The area, steeped in tradition and a way of life akin to the hobbits, has become a point of pilgrimage for fans, expressing appreciation for a lifestyle that feels both magical and timeless.
