Troopers Help Students Return to School Safely

Hundreds of students in Jefferson County resumed classes on Thursday, marking the start of a new school year for Jeffco Public Schools, which serves nearly 81,000 students across 166 schools in communities such as Golden, Westminster, and Ken Caryl. To ensure a safe return, Colorado State Patrol troopers were deployed outside Woodrow Wilson Academy, assisting students and parents as they navigated the busy streets. Troopers engaged with families to educate them on the importance of using crosswalks and remaining vigilant around traffic. Collaborating with a crossing guard, they facilitated safe passage for students crossing the street. This initiative comes in response to alarming statistics regarding pedestrian safety, as Colorado experienced a record number of pedestrian fatalities in 2023, with 153 deaths reported—an 18% increase from the previous year. Trooper Sherri Mendez emphasized the critical need for adherence to safety protocols, stating that using crosswalks significantly enhances the safety of children. "It's safer for kids to walk on the crosswalk as opposed to jaywalking," she noted, highlighting that drivers are more prepared to see pedestrians in designated areas. While the patrol focused on Woodrow Wilson Academy, the message of safety was intended for all schools in the district. Troopers underscored the importance of community cooperation in fostering a secure environment for students as they return to their educational routines.
