Gov. Hochul Silent on Migrant Crisis in DNC

During her address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) failed to address the ongoing migrant crisis affecting her state, which has seen record levels of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border. Hochul, who highlighted her Irish immigrant heritage, did not acknowledge the significant strain that the influx of migrants has placed on New York's housing, social services, and financial resources since the Biden administration took office in January 2021. Since the spring of 2022, over 210,000 migrants have arrived in New York City, with nearly 64,000 currently residing in taxpayer-funded hotels and shelters established by Mayor Eric Adams (D). The situation has escalated to the point where Adams is considering closing one shelter due to a series of violent incidents, including a manslaughter case involving three migrants and a separate incident where a migrant was arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in a park. The New York City Police Department has also conducted raids on these shelters, searching for contraband such as firearms and illegal drugs. The financial burden on New Yorkers, who already face high taxes, is expected to reach an estimated $12 billion by Fiscal Year 2025, according to figures from Adams' office. The escalating crisis raises concerns about the long-term implications for the city and its residents.
