Northern California to experience mid-week cool down after hot weekend

Northern California has experienced an extended period of high temperatures, with downtown Sacramento recording its 43rd day of temperatures at or above 100 degrees this year, just one day shy of the all-time record set in 2022. This prolonged heatwave has been attributed to a persistent ridge of high pressure and the absence of a Delta Breeze, which typically helps moderate temperatures in the region. As the week progresses, a shift in the weather pattern is expected, bringing relief from the heat. Starting Monday, the high-pressure system will begin to move eastward, allowing cooler air to flow in from the Gulf of Alaska. This change will result in a drop in temperatures, with valley highs expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s, aligning more closely with seasonal averages. Morning temperatures will also start in the 60s, providing a more comfortable start to the day. By Wednesday afternoon, winds are expected to pick up across the Valley, and there is a possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the northern Sacramento Valley, foothills, and Sierra regions.
