Story

CLEVELAND (AP) — Nick Mileti, a pivotal figure in Cleveland's sports history and co-founder of the Cleveland Cavaliers, has died at the age of 93. Born to Sicilian immigrants, Mileti became a significant player in the city's sports scene after acquiring the Cleveland Barons, a minor league hockey team, and the Cleveland Arena in 1968. His vision for professional basketball in Cleveland materialized in 1970 when he raised $2.25 million by selling shares of the expansion Cavaliers, ultimately securing the franchise for the city. Mileti's influence extended beyond basketball; he was part of a group that purchased the Cleveland Indians, now known as the Guardians, in 1972, and he played a crucial role in the construction of the Richfield Coliseum, the Cavaliers' home from 1974 to 1994. Additionally, he acquired a World Hockey Association team, the Crusaders, and owned two major radio stations in the area. However, financial pressures led to his departure from the Indians in 1975 and the eventual dissolution of the Crusaders in 1976. Despite stepping back from ownership roles, Mileti's legacy endured. He was honored as part of the Cavaliers' inaugural Wall of Honor in 2019 and received an NBA championship ring from the team's 2015-16 title squad. Former Cavs player Jim Chones reflected on Mileti's impact, stating, “He loved Cleveland, and Cleveland loved him.” His contributions to the city’s sports culture will be remembered for generations.
