Teacher tapes 9-year-old to desk for an hour in shocking classroom incident

In October 2023, a serious incident occurred in New Jersey at Lenox Elementary School when Todd Lewis, a 57-year-old teacher, was accused of taping a nine-year-old student to his desk for an extended period. Lewis allegedly used masking tape to secure the child's neck to the desk, holding him in place for about 40 to 50 minutes. This disturbing act took place in the presence of Sallyann Scala, a 67-year-old teacher’s aide, who was reportedly aware of the situation but failed to act. The child later recounted these events to the Pompton Lakes Police Department, leading to an investigation. The police acted swiftly, charging Lewis with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and Scala with fourth-degree abuse and neglect of children. Following the allegations, both individuals were placed on administrative leave by the school district and were prohibited from entering the campus pending further investigation. Lewis appeared before judicial proceedings where he received a warrant for his arrest. He was subsequently released with conditions that prevent him from having any contact with children during the ongoing legal process. If found guilty, Lewis faces a potential prison sentence ranging from five to ten years, while Scala could face up to 18 months imprisonment.
