Taiwan President calls for unity against Chinese threat

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te emphasized the need for national unity against the growing threat from China during a visit to the Kinmen islands on the anniversary of the 1958 artillery attack known as the "823 bombardment." This event, which resulted in significant casualties, serves as a historical reminder of the ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, with the latter claiming Taiwan as part of its territory and maintaining the option of military force to assert control. During his visit, Lai laid a wreath at a cemetery honoring the victims of the bombardment, which lasted 44 days and resulted in the deaths of 618 individuals. He urged the Taiwanese people to embody the spirit of resilience shown by those who defended the islands during the attack, stating, “We must be determined to protect Taiwan.” He highlighted that the current threats from China are as significant as in previous years, calling for a united front to defend national sovereignty and democracy. Lai, who has been labeled a "dangerous separatist" by Beijing, has faced increased military pressure from China since taking office in May. The Chinese military has conducted extensive drills around Taiwan, with the Taiwanese defense ministry reporting numerous incursions by Chinese aircraft and naval vessels in recent days. In response, Taiwan's armed forces have heightened their readiness, employing various military assets to monitor and counter these activities. As tensions escalate, Lai's administration remains committed to safeguarding Taiwan's sovereignty, urging citizens to stand together against external threats.
