Kimberley Woods has clinched her first Olympic medal, a bronze, in a thrilling kayak event that saw her time of 98.94 seconds secure her place on the podium. The race took a dramatic turn when a mistake by a German competitor resulted in a 50-second penalty, allowing Woods to finish behind Australia’s Jessica Fox and Poland’s Klaudia Zwolinska, who took silver. Woods expressed her disbelief and joy, stating, “It feels absolutely incredible,” as she reflected on her emotional journey over the past decade. Woods, who was introduced to kayaking by her aunt Diane, a former silver medallist, has been open about her struggles, including a period of self-harm prior to the Tokyo Olympics. She emphasized the importance of seeking help and maintaining communication with her coach, who has been a significant support in her life. The medal, she said, “makes everything worth it,” highlighting her growth and resilience. Following her disappointment in Tokyo, Woods rebounded strongly, winning a world championship bronze in 2021 just days after a car accident. She later secured her first world title in kayak cross at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Lee Valley, where she also earned medals in other events. Looking ahead, Woods is set to compete again in kayak cross, which will debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she is considered a strong contender. As she prepares for the upcoming event, Woods remains focused on enjoying the experience and connecting with the crowd, stating, “I can’t wait to sit on top of that ramp.”
