Story

Prague – A coalition of non-profit organizations, including Glopolis, Reconstruction of the State, NeoN, and the Network for the Protection of Democracy, has called on the Czech government to engage in discussions regarding the state of law in the country. This appeal follows the European Commission's recent report, which highlighted both progress and ongoing challenges in the Czech Republic's legal framework. The organizations have sent an open letter to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, seeking clarity on the government's response to the Commission's recommendations. The European Commission's annual report, released on July 24, noted positive developments in the Czech Republic, particularly in the reform of the public prosecutor's office and updates to conflict of interest legislation. However, it also pointed out significant shortcomings in the investigation of corruption, prompting the non-profits to advocate for further dialogue on these issues. Spokesman Jakub Tomek emphasized the government's appreciation for civic engagement in national development and assured that the letter would be carefully reviewed. As the Prime Minister and ministers are currently on vacation until August 15, the organizations are eager to discuss pressing matters such as public media funding, the reform of the Office for the Protection of Competition, and lobbying regulations. Lukáš Kraus from Reconstruction of the State expressed the urgency of addressing these topics to ensure the continued strengthening of democracy and rule of law in the Czech Republic.
