Berlin’s Watergate nightclub to close after 22 years on New Year’s Eve

Berlin's Watergate nightclub, a prominent venue in the city's nightlife, will close its doors after 22 years, with the final event scheduled for New Year's Eve. The decision comes as the club's management cites ongoing economic challenges, including inflation and rising energy costs, as well as a shift in the preferences of younger audiences who now favor outdoor events. Co-founder Ulrich Wombacher noted that the pandemic has fundamentally altered nightlife behavior, with many young people opting to stay home or attend festivals instead of clubbing. Founded in 2002, Watergate initially focused on drum’n’bass but evolved into a high-end venue known for deep-house and techno music, attracting crowds from across Europe. Despite being voted number 34 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs poll this year, the club has struggled to maintain its appeal in a changing landscape. Wombacher expressed concerns about Berlin's outdated image and the impact of a growing drug problem in Kreuzberg, which has deterred tourists. The closure of Watergate follows the announcement from another Berlin nightclub, Wilde Renate, which plans to cease operations in 2025 due to lease disputes. The nightlife scene in Berlin faces further threats from urban development projects, such as the planned extension of the A100 motorway, which could jeopardize many clubs in the area. Wombacher criticized the effectiveness of state subsidies in supporting club culture, arguing that nightlife is inherently dynamic and cannot be managed through a planned economy. The closure of Watergate marks a significant loss for Berlin's vibrant nightlife, reflecting broader challenges faced by the industry in the post-pandemic era.
