Story

John Rose, a lifelong socialist and committed anti-Zionist, died at the age of 79 due to renal failure. His activism began during his time as an undergraduate at the London School of Economics in the 1960s, where he emerged as a key figure in the 1968 student revolt against the appointment of Walter Adams. In collaboration with ANC activist Ronnie Kasrils, he initiated significant anti-apartheid efforts by smuggling literature into South Africa. Rose’s life was marked by his strong beliefs against oppression, leading to his abandonment of support for the state of Israel following the 1967 six-day war. This shift deepened his commitment to the Palestinian cause, making him a prominent speaker and writer on the topic. He authored 'The Myths of Zionism' in 2004, where he critically analyzed Zionist narratives surrounding the land of Palestine, contributing significantly to the discourse on Palestinian rights. Throughout his life, he maintained an independent and critical perspective, often taking on public roles without seeking personal recognition. His work in education included a lecturing position at Southwark Further Education College, and he was an active member of the Natfhe lecturers’ union. Despite his considerable impact, he was a shy individual who approached public engagements with humility and commitment rather than a desire for self-promotion. His relationships were important to him, as demonstrated by his marriage to Elaheh Rostami in 2003 and his close connection with family, including his niece, Luci. Sadly, Rose did not live to see the publication of his PhD dissertation, which explored the adverse effects of orthodox communism on global workers' struggles, completed in 2020. John Rose's dedication to anti-imperialist struggles, particularly in support of the Palestinian cause and against apartheid in South Africa, marks a significant legacy. His life and ideas continue to inspire activists and scholars, echoing the need for solidarity among oppressed peoples worldwide.
