In a statement to The Center Square, Republican Party of Kentucky Communications Director Andy Westberry countered Beshear's assertions, highlighting the stark differences in their backgrounds. Westberry noted that while Beshear comes from a privileged political family, Vance's upbringing was marked by hardship. This contrast has fueled the ongoing debate about the authenticity of their respective connections to Kentucky's working-class citizens. State Senator Robby Mills, a Republican, also weighed in on the controversy, criticizing Beshear's remarks during a recent CNN interview where he labeled Vance a "charlatan." Mills suggested that such partisan attacks are acceptable only when one is seeking higher office, implying that Beshear's motivations may be politically driven. Beshear's recent comments echo his previous confrontations with Trump during his tenure as attorney general. He has characterized Trump as a threat to democracy, particularly referencing the events of January 6, 2021. In response, Westberry asserted that the Republican Party remains committed to uplifting hardworking Americans from all backgrounds.
