Poll shows tighter Harris-Trump race among English-speaking Latinos
- A poll of 3,000 Latino eligible voters shows varying support for Kamala Harris and Donald Trump based on language preference.
- Harris leads with 64% in Spanish-dominant households, while support in English-speaking households is lower at 51%.
- The findings suggest a significant divide in political alignment, indicating a competitive race among Latino voters.
A recent poll conducted from August 3-23 surveyed 3,000 Latino eligible voters, revealing that Vice President Kamala Harris has stronger support among Spanish-speaking and bilingual households compared to English-speaking ones. In Spanish-dominant households, 64% favor Harris, while only 30% support Trump. Among bilingual households, Harris receives 54% of the votes, with Trump at 33%. In contrast, English-speaking households show 51% support for Harris and 38% for Trump. The poll, released by UnidosUS and conducted by BSP Research, indicates a significant divide in political alignment based on language preference. Clarissa Martinez de Castro from UnidosUS noted that Latino voters who are more comfortable in Spanish tend to align more closely with Democratic values. The poll also highlights that in English-speaking households, 39% identify as Democrats compared to 25% as Republicans, while bilingual households show a more balanced split. Experts suggest that the political preferences of Latino voters shift over generations, with recently naturalized immigrants being more pro-Democratic. Mike Madrid, a Republican consultant, emphasized that the messaging from Democrats resonates more with Latino voters. Despite Harris's improved standing among Latinos, some analysts caution that her support is still below the 65% share that Biden achieved in 2020. Overall, while Harris has made gains in Latino support, the competition remains tight, indicating that the upcoming election could be closely contested among this demographic group.
