Story

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets rookie pitcher Christian Scott has initiated a throwing program as he aims to rejoin the team’s rotation this season following a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow. On Tuesday, Scott completed 35 throws at a distance of 75 feet, building on a previous session of 25 throws from 60 feet on Sunday. Since his major league debut on May 4, where he showcased his potential against Tampa Bay, Scott has struggled with a record of 0-3 and a 4.56 ERA over nine starts. He was placed on the injured list on July 22 due to a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The 25-year-old expressed enthusiasm about the Mets' playoff aspirations, stating, “It’s really exciting how this team’s making a push to the playoffs. Hopefully, I can be a part of that.” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged Scott's progress but emphasized that the pitcher still has several steps to complete before a return is feasible. Mendoza remains optimistic, noting, “It’s good that he’s throwing the baseball. We’ve just got to wait and see how he continues to progress.” As of Tuesday night, the Mets were positioned at 61-57, trailing Atlanta by one game in the race for the final National League wild card spot. The team has faced challenges with injuries, including to fellow pitcher Kodai Senga, who was placed on the 60-day injured list after straining his left calf. The Mets' rotation depth has been further tested, relying on less experienced starters at Triple-A Syracuse.
