The incident occurred on June 30 on the Bruce Highway in far north Queensland, when the bus, en route to Townsville, collided with a 4WD towing a caravan. Peter Jason Cafe, 52, from Townsville, faces five counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm. The crash left 27 passengers injured, with three men suffering serious injuries and requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, an elderly couple in the 4WD escaped without injuries. According to police reports, the bus allegedly veered onto the wrong side of the road, colliding with a Landcruiser station wagon traveling in the opposite direction. Among the deceased was Ms. Tonga, whose body was repatriated to Germany for burial in her hometown of Wesel on July 18. Her family expressed their grief, stating that her husband of 19 years was "beside himself" with sorrow. Similarly, the family of Ms. Sailor shared their shock and loss, emphasizing the love and support she received from her grandchildren and immediate family.
