Sophia the robot captivates Zimbabwe at innovation fair

In December 2024, Sophia, a highly recognized robot created by Hanson Robotics, attended a significant Artificial Intelligence and Innovation fair in Zimbabwe. This event took place at the University of Zimbabwe and marked a unique occasion as it was the first time the country welcomed a robot of her kind. She also addressed personal inquiries, clarifying her non-human nature by stating she does not possess romantic feelings. Sophia’s visit was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), aiming to inspire Zimbabwean youth to consider careers in artificial intelligence (AI) and STEM fields. During her interactions, she demonstrated a range of human-like behaviors, such as smiling, frowning, and maintaining eye contact, which helped engage her audience. Notably, she managed to capture the hearts of both the young and the old, all of whom sought selfies and conversations with her. Sophia’s demeanor was friendly and patient, as she answered numerous questions while also prompting attendees on local issues. The robot's design and abilities, including her capacity for conversation and expression, were highlighted throughout the event.
