Mason Greenwood to Continue International Career

Highlights
  • Mason Greenwood unlikely to play for England again.
  • The striker plans to continue his international career after leaving Manchester United.
  • Decision made after talks with Steve McClaren.
Story

Mason Greenwood is in discussions to change his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, following talks with Jamaica's new manager, Steve McClaren. The Manchester United striker, who has one senior cap for England, is unlikely to represent his home country again after a series of legal troubles. In October 2022, Greenwood was arrested and charged with serious offenses, including attempted rape, but those charges were dropped in February 2023. With McClaren's recent appointment, efforts to secure Greenwood's transfer to the Jamaican national team have intensified. The Football Association (FA) has received the necessary paperwork for his switch, and the Jamaica Football Association (JFA) is expected to submit a request to FIFA for approval. Greenwood is eligible to play for Jamaica due to FIFA regulations, which allow players to change national teams if they have participated in no more than three competitive senior matches before turning 21. Having played only once for England, Greenwood's potential switch could open the door for him to compete in the 2026 World Cup. Jamaica, currently ranked 59th in the world, is in a qualifying group with Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Dominica, which could enhance their chances of securing a World Cup spot. However, before the qualification campaign begins, Jamaica will face Cuba and Honduras in the CONCACAF Nations League next month, although Greenwood is unlikely to be eligible to play in those matches.
