Police Investigate Officer's Actions After Viral Cow Incident

Surrey Police have initiated a criminal investigation following the controversial actions of an officer who was filmed driving a patrol car into a runaway calf in Staines-upon-Thames. The incident, which involved a 10-month-old calf named Beau Lucy, gained significant public attention after footage circulated online, prompting widespread outrage. Former Home Secretary James Cleverly has called for a "full, urgent explanation" regarding the officer's conduct. In response to the backlash, the officer involved was suspended from frontline duties shortly after the incident. Surrey Police confirmed that the matter is being treated as both a criminal investigation and an internal misconduct review, led by the Professional Standards Department and overseen by a senior investigating officer. The force has received approximately 2,000 complaints and over 20,000 messages on social media related to the event, highlighting the public's concern. Deputy Chief Constable Nev Kemp stated that the investigation is thorough, with officers conducting around 290 house-to-house inquiries and reaching out to 75 witnesses.
