NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — In a shocking turn of events, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, a suspect in the murder of 42 women, escaped from police custody alongside 12 other inmates, all of whom were detained for immigration violations. Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, confirmed the escape occurred during breakfast service at the police station, prompting immediate disciplinary action against eight officers, including the area commander. Preliminary investigations suggest that the escape may have been facilitated by insiders, raising serious concerns about security protocols. Khalusha, 33, was being held after a court granted detectives additional time to investigate his alleged crimes. He was arrested in July following the discovery of ten bodies and various body parts in plastic sacks in Nairobi's Kware area. Khalusha reportedly confessed to the murders, including that of his wife, although his lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, claims his client was tortured into confessing and maintains his innocence. Ndegwa expressed his shock at the escape, having last communicated with Khalusha just days prior. In response to the escape, the police station has been cordoned off as a crime scene, with senior officers conducting investigations. Meanwhile, two additional suspects, found in possession of cellphones belonging to some of the deceased women, are scheduled to appear in court next Monday. The case has drawn significant public attention, especially following the initial discovery of the bodies, which was prompted by a family's dream about a missing relative.
