- The scam involved a fraudulent call about a sim card and bank account in Mumbai.
- The victim fell prey to the elaborate scam, highlighting the dangers of phone fraud.
In a shocking incident, a 67-year-old woman from Nagpur has reported being defrauded of Rs 23.20 lakh by a gang of scammers impersonating police officers. The woman received a phone call on July 15 from an unknown female caller, who claimed that a SIM card had been registered in her name and linked to a bank account in Mumbai. This alarming news set off a chain of events that led to her financial loss. The following day, the victim received a video call from an individual dressed in a police uniform, who identified himself as an officer from the Tilak Nagar police station. He presented a fabricated document claiming to be an Enforcement Directorate arrest warrant, which he sent to her via WhatsApp. The scam escalated when another member of the gang, posing as an Additional Director General of Police, contacted her with similar false assertions, further convincing her of the legitimacy of their claims. It was only after discussing the situation with her son that the woman realized she had been scammed. Prompted by this revelation, she approached the police to file a formal complaint, leading to the registration of an offense. This incident highlights a growing trend of scams in the region, as evidenced by a recent case involving a 53-year-old man who was similarly deceived by fraudsters posing as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and police.
