Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett debunks GOP lies about the Census

In a recent hearing of the House Oversight Committee, Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett confronted Republican assertions regarding the U.S. Census, specifically accusations of anti-white bias and misrepresentation of the counting of illegal immigrants. During the session, Crockett critiqued her colleagues, including Rep. Nancy Mace, for their misunderstanding of the Census' purpose and raised concerns about the implications of their rhetoric. She presented detailed census data showing that Texas's population grew by 4 million from 2010 to 2020, and asked Census Director Robert Santos about the demographic breakdown of this growth. Notably, Crockett revealed that out of the 4 million new residents in Texas, only 180,000 were Anglos, underscoring the substantial growth of Black, Latino, and Asian populations in the state. This demographic shift resulted in Texas gaining two additional congressional seats, which Crockett argued were disproportionately represented by white Republicans due to gerrymandering practices. Additionally, she drew attention to the issue of prison gerrymandering where incarcerated individuals, mostly from non-white backgrounds, contribute to the population counts in predominantly white rural counties. This tactic effectively dilutes the representation of minority voters, turning their population growth into political advantage for white representation while undermining their electoral power. Crockett's line of questioning and willingness to confront her colleagues showcased the need for Democratic lawmakers to counter baseless narratives and engage more assertively with misleading claims from the Republican Party, providing a model for resilience against extreme rhetoric.
