In Kenya, a heart-wrenching situation has unfolded for Kaz Gatuthu Theuri and his family as they deal with the death of their beloved father, 82-year-old Titus Gatuthu Kabüru Theuri. He was hospitalized in Nairobi on August 29 after suddenly falling ill. Despite the family's desperate pleas and efforts, following a two-month stay in intensive care for the former civil servant suffering from septic pneumonia, the hospital refuses to release his remains for a funeral. They demand a staggering £45,000 in medical bills, putting immense financial pressure on the grieving family. Over the past two months, Kaz and his family have managed to pay only £14,000 of the medical fees. The hospital's demands for immediate payment have compounded their grief. Kaz described receiving daily calls from the hospital’s finance department, which pressed for immediate payments while his father lay in ICU, showing a troubling lack of empathy during this tragic time. The family is devastated, feeling that their father's remains are being treated as a commodity rather than a human being deserving of dignity. Kaz has taken steps to try and resolve the situation, including reaching out to governmental authorities such as the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, his local MP Oliver Dowden, and the Kenya High Commission, in hopes of finding a solution to retrieve his father's body. The objective is to honor Titus’s wishes by conducting a burial in Kenya, his homeland, where he had expressed a desire to be laid to rest. Even with an agreement momentarily seeming close, the hospital unexpectedly altered payment terms, leaving the family once again without closure. Despite reaching out for support through platforms like GoFundMe to raise funds for the outstanding medical bill and funeral costs, the family's suffering continues. Kaz highlighted that they lack both a death certificate and a burial permit, further complicating their grieving process. Adding to that burden, their mother, who had been married to Titus for over 50 years, is in a state of distress, unable to process her husband's death fully due to the ongoing situation. The have called the hospital’s treatment of them “rude, crass, and demonic.” They feel trapped in a harsh and unforgiving system that does not provide the support needed during such an incredibly difficult time. Kaz expressed deep frustration at the hospital's complete disregard for his family's emotional turmoil, emphasizing that the institution’s actions have turned an already painful experience into a nightmare, leaving them feeling abandoned and helpless as they chase for closure.
