Arsenal to Sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad

Arsenal Football Club has reached an agreement to sign midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for a fee of €33.5 million (£28.4 million), with an additional €5 million in potential variables. The 28-year-old Spanish international is expected to finalize a four-year contract, with an option for a fifth year, pending a medical examination. Merino has been a long-term target for the Gunners and was notably absent from Real Sociedad's recent match against Rayo Vallecano, signaling a potential move. If the transfer is completed, Merino will become Arsenal's third signing of the summer, following the permanent acquisition of goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford and defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. Merino, who began his career at Osasuna, has also played for Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United before joining Real Sociedad in 2018. During his time at Sociedad, he has made 242 appearances, scoring 27 goals and providing 30 assists, while also contributing to Spain's Euro 2024-winning campaign. Arsenal has faced challenges in the left midfield position since Granit Xhaka's departure to Bayer Leverkusen last year. The initial strategy of utilizing Kai Havertz in that role did not yield the desired results, prompting a shift in tactics. The addition of Merino is expected to enhance the team's fluidity and athleticism in midfield, complementing the box-to-box role of Declan Rice, another summer signing. Merino's arrival could also facilitate a dynamic partnership with Arsenal's captain Martin Ødegaard, reminiscent of the successful collaboration seen during his tenure at Real Sociedad, where he thrived alongside current Premier League stars.
