Illegal Immigrant Pleads Guilty in Assault on NYPD Officers
- An undocumented immigrant accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to one year in prison for assaulting two NYPD officers.
- This incident occurred earlier in the year and was part of a larger case involving multiple illegal immigrants.
- The verdict underscores rising tensions surrounding immigration and policing in New York City.
In a significant development, Darwin Gomez-Izquiel, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant, accepted a plea deal on Monday related to the brutal assault of two New York City police officers in Times Square earlier this year. The plea agreement, facilitated by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, mandates that Gomez-Izquiel serve 364 days in jail. Other migrants involved in the incident, including Yohenry Brito, 24, and Ulises Bohorquez, 21, were also offered similar plea deals, each facing a year in jail after pleading guilty to second-degree assault. Patrick Hendry, president of the New York Police Benevolent Association, expressed dissatisfaction with the length of the sentences, advocating for harsher penalties. He welcomed Gomez-Izquiel's guilty plea but emphasized the necessity of immediate deportation following his release. "He needs to be deported immediately upon release, without setting another foot on our city streets," Hendry stated, highlighting concerns over public safety. The assault occurred in January when NYPD officers attempted to disperse a group of migrants in Times Square. Surveillance footage captured the violent encounter, showing the suspects attacking the officers with punches and kicks while they were on the ground. Many of the assailants were charged with assault but were released without bail, raising questions about the judicial handling of such cases. Among the suspects, Yorman Reveron, 24, stands out with two pending cases for assault and robbery, indicating a troubling pattern of criminal behavior among some of the defendants involved in the incident.
