SpaceX's First Spacewalk for Polaris Dawn Mission

SpaceX is gearing up for its next private mission, Polaris Dawn, scheduled to launch from Florida on August 26. This mission marks a significant milestone as it will be the company's first attempt at a spacewalk. Polaris Dawn is the inaugural flight of three purchased by billionaire Jared Isaacman in 2022 as part of his Polaris Program, aimed at advancing human spaceflight. Isaacman, the founder of Shift4, expressed excitement about the launch timing, which is expected to occur close to dawn. He highlighted the mission's ambitious goal of reaching an altitude of 1,400 kilometers, a height not achieved by humans in over 50 years. The crew has been rigorously training for the challenges of a spacewalk, acknowledging the inherent risks involved. The mission will last up to five days, with the first day focused on assessing the risk of micrometeorite debris to determine the optimal launch time. Isaacman emphasized the importance of ensuring the spacecraft is fault-free before ascending to high altitudes, where radiation levels are significantly higher than at lower altitudes. He noted that the crew's exposure to radiation during the mission could equate to three months on the International Space Station. During the spacewalk, Isaacman and crew member Gillis will venture outside the Dragon capsule, while Poteet and Menon will remain inside to provide support. The mission plans to livestream the spacewalk, with numerous cameras positioned both inside and outside the capsule to capture the historic event.
