Recently, a deadly virus, known as the Marburg virus, has been reported in Rwanda, claiming the lives of 15 individuals. This virus is similar to Ebola and is particularly alarming due to one of its gruesome symptoms, which includes bleeding from the eyes. Currently, 17 countries are affected as the virus spreads across Africa. In addition to Marburg, Mpox and Oropouche viruses are also on the rise, further complicating the public health situation in the region. While Marburg is rare among travelers, cases have been noted in individuals who spent extended periods in close contact with bat colonies, leading experts to recommend caution among those planning to visit affected areas. The World Health Organization notes that Marburg can have an incubation period of 2 to 21 days, with early symptoms resembling severe flu and gastric distress. As the situation unfolds, health authorities are urging travelers to stay informed and vigilant about their health and safety.
