Story

In the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local militia groups, collectively known as Wazalendo, are actively engaging in battles against the M23 rebels. These self-defense forces, which translate to "patriots" in Kiswahili, have emerged as a response to the insurgency threatening their communities. Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has called upon the youth to join the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) or take up arms independently, fostering a partnership between the Wazalendo and FARDC in their shared struggle against M23. The situation is dire for many families, particularly women who face the threat of violence while searching for food. One young woman, whose identity is protected for safety reasons, recounts her experiences and the emotional toll of her decision to join the fight, despite her mother's pleas to stay safe. The conflict has deeply affected families, with many losing loved ones and homes, as illustrated by the story of Zawadi Tumsifi, who mourns her husband while supporting her daughter’s involvement in the Coalition of Movements for Change (CMC), a Wazalendo group. General Mbokani Kimanuka, founder of the UFPDC, emphasizes the unity among Congolese fighters, stating that they are all working together against a common enemy. The Congolese government is considering integrating Wazalendo fighters into a reserve brigade of the national army, a move that raises concerns about the potential for future rebellions, reminiscent of past conflicts in the region.
