He won the Military Medal in Northern Ireland after he was shot by an IRA man. But he successfully recovered a store of weapons and saved a life. He also won the military Medal for his role in the rescue of a man who was shot in the head by the IRA.

Michael ‘Bronco’ Lane caught the imagination of the British public in May 1976. He and another SAS soldier had a near-death experience after successfully climbing Mount Everest. Lane lost all ten toes and a thumb on his descent from Everest. He has died aged 78.
