New jails in the Bronx and Queens are on track to open four years after the deadline to close Rikers Island

The women's section of Rikers Island is getting a redesigned and more kid-friendly visitation room ahead of Mother's Day.

The city intends to sign construction contracts worth close to $7 billion with two construction partnerships for the new Queens and Bronx jails that show they may not be completed until 2031 — four years after the 2027 Close Rikers deadline — city records show.
