The Commons approves plans to exclude MPs who have been arrested for violent or sexual crimes

MPs arrested for rape face being barred from Parliament after the Commons voted to reverse moves to water down the measures.

MPs are this afternoon due to vote on whether to exclude colleagues who have been charged by police with a violent or sexual offence from the parliamentary estate.

MPs voted for a ban at the point of arrest instead of charge, as proposed by the government. The vote follows a number of incidents involving MPs in recent years and concerns about the safety of those working in parliament.
