Story

A 19-year-old was arrested for shooting 16-year-old Mahki Brown near his school in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood. The suspect's name has not been released, and the charges he will face are unknown. He was taken into custody in Harlem around 6 a.m. on Friday by the U.S. Marshals Service. Mahki Brown attended Broome Street Academy Charter High School, located just a block away from where the shooting occurred. He traveled from East Flatbush, Brooklyn every day to pursue his dreams, particularly his passion for basketball. The shooting happened last Tuesday near the school as students were leaving for the day, between Spring and Dominick streets. This was the first shooting in the neighborhood in over 16 months. According to police sources, Brown was trying to stop a fight between a group of girls when two suspects on a Citi Bike started shooting. Brown was hit twice in the leg and once in the head. It is uncertain if the 19-year-old arrested on Friday was the one who fired the shots. The search is ongoing for the second suspect.
