Zelenskyy warns of potential second Russian attack in Kharkiv as morale falls among troops

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, thinks Russia will attack more in the north-east. He says Kyiv doesn't have enough air defenses to protect the front line. Russian forces made a surprise attack in the Kharkiv region on May 10. They gained the most land in a year and a half. Zelenskiy said Russian troops moved about 5 to 10km along the border before Ukrainian forces stopped them. He thinks this could be the start of a bigger attack. Zelenskiy asked for more air defense and fighter jets from allies to fight Russia's strong air force. Many Ukrainian soldiers have been fighting for over two years without a break. Zelenskiy said Ukraine is still planning for the long term, even though western allies want a quick end to the war. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said the attack in the north-east was because Ukraine shelled border regions. Ukrainian officials said Russian soldiers in Vovchansk took civilians as "human shields." Ukrainian troops are strengthening their defense in Vovchansk. Over 1 million people still live there. The Ukrainian army chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, said Russia wants Ukraine to use more troops from reserves. Zelenskiy talked about the fighting in Kharkiv and criticized Western supporters for not helping enough. He warned that Russia's new attack in the northeast might be just the beginning of more attacks. Zelenskiy asked allies for more air defense and fighter jets. He said Ukraine only has 25% of the air defenses it needs. Ukraine needs more soldiers to fight. Zelenskiy signed laws to let prisoners join the army and punish draft dodgers more. Russia said they don't plan to capture Kharkiv, just create a buffer zone. Ukraine fought back with drone attacks in Crimea. They hit Russian military sites in Novorossiysk and Sevastopol. Russia's Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol was damaged by a drone attack.
