- The coup attempt comes amidst political unrest within President Tshisekedi's ruling party and increasing opposition threats.
Government forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo stopped a coup attempt on Sunday. Three people died in a shootout in Kinshasa. This made tensions rise as authorities try to bring back order and investigate. The Congolese army spokesperson said on TV that they stopped the coup attempt involving foreigners and Congolese. The leader of the group was also stopped. The incident started when Christian Malanga, an opposition leader, posted a video on Facebook. He claimed to be the president of the "New Zaïre government in exile" and threatened the president of Congo. Malanga's party, the United Congolese Party, is against the current government. There were clashes between men in military uniform and guards of Vital Kamerhe, a legislator, near the presidential palace. The president, Tshisekedi, who was re-elected in a disputed election, has not spoken about the events. He warned that he might dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections if there are more problems. The situation is tense in the country as the government works to keep things under control.
