Londoners donate non-compliant Ulez vehicles to help Ukraine after Sadiq Khan's snub on scrappage scheme talks

Provocative
Highlights
  • Londoners donate non-compliant Ulez vehicles to Ukraine for aid instead of scrapping them.
  • Sadiq Khan snubs talks on sending non-Ulez cars to Ukraine, causing controversy.
  • Transport Secretary meets delegation to discuss efficiency improvements despite Khan's office neglect.
Story

More than 100 vehicles were given to Ukraine through London's Ultra Low Emissions Zone (Ulez) scrappage scheme. A group of 20 vehicles was sent to Ukraine last weekend. The charity British-Ukrainian Aid (BUAID) is in charge of delivering the vehicles. They mentioned that each vehicle is important and is being used for tasks like evacuations and medical emergencies. The charity expressed gratitude for the support from London and Kyiv mayors, partners, and donors. Londoners who join the Ulez scrappage scheme and donate their vehicles have them organized and delivered by BUAID. This helps in the green transition and supports the Ulez introduction in London. William Godfrey Lewis offered space on his farm to store the vehicles before they are sent to Ukraine. He felt it was his moral duty to help during the war. A delegation from Kyiv visited London to discuss sending non-compliant Ulez vehicles to Ukraine. However, they were not able to meet with London Mayor Sadiq Khan due to election rules. The delegation met with Transport Secretary Mark Harper and Communities Secretary Michael Gove instead. The scheme has received criticism for sending non-compliant vehicles to Ukraine, but it aims to help with humanitarian aid and medical purposes. The Ulez area in London was expanded to cover the entire capital to reduce pollution. People driving non-compliant vehicles in this zone must pay a daily fee. The Ulez scrappage scheme allows Londoners to donate their vehicles to Ukraine for humanitarian purposes. Over 100 vehicles have been donated since the scheme started.
