Honoring Fallen Soldiers: Memorial Day Events in Minnesota

There are many events happening in Minnesota to honor the soldiers who died serving our country. Governor Tim Walz will lead a ceremony at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Over 1,000 people are expected to attend. Volunteers placed around 200,000 flags at the cemetery where soldiers and their spouses are buried. This is all in preparation for the event on Monday morning at 9:45 a.m. At Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, there will be a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. After the ceremony, there will be free refreshments and activities for families. These activities include writing postcards to veterans and tying ribbons on a memory tree. In St. Paul at the capitol, the Anoka County chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America will hold a Memorial Day service at 3 p.m. Many other communities in Minnesota will also have their own Memorial Day events. In White Bear Lake, a parade will start at City Hall and go to Union Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. After the parade, there will be a memorial service and refreshments at the American Legion. A community lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to noon. First Lt. Jim Rasmussen, a member of the 349th Squadron of the 100th Bomb Group in World War II, will be the keynote speaker this year. The 100th Bomb Group's story was recently shown in the Apple TV+ miniseries "Masters of the Air."
