Story

A man from Washington state named Julio Segura was found guilty of murder for his part in the death of a police officer in 2022. The officer, Donald Sahota, was mistakenly shot by a sheriff's deputy. Segura was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding police by a jury in Clark County. Donald Sahota, a Vancouver police officer, was off duty and at home in Battle Ground when he was fatally shot on January 29, 2022. Segura had earlier robbed a gas station near Vancouver and was chased by deputies to Battle Ground. Sahota's wife called 911 after Segura claimed he crashed his car and needed help. Sahota went outside to confront Segura in the driveway, where Segura stabbed him three times during a struggle. Deputy Jonathan Feller witnessed Sahota picking up a gun and running towards the house. Sahota died from gunshot wounds to the torso. Segura claimed he acted in self-defense when he stabbed Sahota. His defense argued that Segura was cornered by Sahota and Feller recklessly opened fire. Another defense lawyer mentioned the need for more training in law enforcement. The defense team is considering an appeal, believing they have a strong argument. Vancouver Police Chief Jeff Mori expressed relief at the verdict but acknowledged the ongoing pain for Sahota's family and friends. Segura's sentencing is scheduled for June 27.
