Story

A University of Wisconsin regent named Robert Atwell, who is conservative, was appointed by former Governor Scott Walker in May 2017. His term as a regent ends this month. Atwell sent an email to the University of Wisconsin President, the regents President, and the regents Executive Director stating that he will not step down until he decides to resign or until the state Senate confirms a new regent. The reason Atwell gave for staying on as a regent is to help communication between legislators and the regents. He mentioned that Assembly Speaker Robin Vos reminded him that he could continue in his position until a successor is confirmed by the Senate. The current Governor, Tony Evers, has not yet announced who will succeed Atwell. Atwell expressed concerns about the financial reporting of the UW system and disagreed with studies that suggest graduates earn more just because they attended a UW school. He also raised questions about faculty and staff who left their positions due to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Atwell is one of two regents appointed by Walker who are still on the board. The other regent's term ends in May 2025.
