Walmart and Capital One end credit card partnership while allowing card usage to continue

Highlights
  • Walmart has concluded its credit card partnership with Capital One, affecting card issuing exclusivity.
  • Despite the end of the partnership, Capital One Walmart Rewards cardholders can continue using their cards.
  • The change marks a shift in the credit card landscape but offers continuity for existing card users.
Story

Walmart and Capital One used to work together for Walmart's credit cards. But Walmart decided to end this partnership. They made an announcement about this change together on a Friday. People who have the Capital One Walmart Rewards cards can still use them and earn rewards. Capital One will still manage these credit card accounts. Walmart first started working with Capital One in 2019, after ending their partnership with Synchrony Financial. However, Walmart became unhappy with Capital One over time. In 2023, Walmart took legal action against Capital One. Walmart claimed that Capital One was too slow in processing payments and sending new cards. A judge agreed with Walmart in March. Capital One mentioned in a government document that there are about $8.5 billion in loans from Walmart's credit card customers. It's not known yet when Walmart will choose a new bank to work with. The Associated Press reached out to Walmart for a comment on Saturday.
