Morning fog turned into scattered showers in the afternoon and evening, causing thunderstorms in New York City on Monday. This led to delays in air traffic and the cancellation of some events. Despite the rain, brave New Yorkers participated in parades to honor fallen soldiers. The Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade has been happening rain or shine since 1927, showing their determination to pay tribute regardless of the weather. In contrast, Connecticut and Pennsylvania had to cancel many parades and events due to the bad weather. An outdoor concert at Third St. in New York City was also called off because of the heavy rain. The concert by the ISO Symphonic Band at Green-Wood Cemetery, which honors those who died serving in the military, had to be canceled. The cancellation was announced on social media by Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery due to the inclement weather. Meteorologists had warned the northwest New York City metro area about thunderstorms with strong winds and hail. Temperatures stayed around 70 degrees on Monday, but the rest of the week is expected to be mostly sunny. Despite a dry weekend leading up to Memorial Day, it's uncommon for New York to have all three holiday days rain-free. According to NBC’s Storm Team 4, most Memorial Day weekends in the area have some rain. After a sunny Memorial Day weekend in 2023, rain arrived in New York City on Memorial Day.
