Story

Labour is choosing from three good candidates to run in Diane Abbott's place. They don't want Abbott to run for them even though they finished looking into her behavior six months ago. Abbott, the first black female MP in Britain, got suspended from the party last April. This happened because of a letter she wrote that seemed to downplay racism against Jewish people. So, when the parliament closed for the general election on July 4th, she was not part of Labour anymore. The investigation by Labour's national executive committee ended in December. They gave Abbott a warning and told her to do an online course on antisemitism in February. Even though Labour gave Abbott back her position in the party, it's unlikely they will choose her as a candidate in the upcoming election. The party might try to stop her from running again for her seat in Hackney North and Stoke Newington because she liked a post by Jeremy Corbyn's wife. This could let Abbott leave the party with respect, according to some party members. Labour has stopped other left-wing people from running and suspended members who supported other parties. They know Abbott has a lot of local support and were hoping to find a peaceful solution because she mentioned health issues. But Abbott's friends wonder why her party future is connected to her health and why she can't decide for herself. The NEC finished its investigation in December, as reported by BBC Newsnight. After a big donor to the Conservatives made racist comments about Abbott, she hoped for support from Labour's leader, Keir Starmer. Starmer criticized the donor's words but said Abbott's suspension was for a different reason. The final list of candidates will be decided soon by Labour's national executive committee. Abbott's whip was given back to her, but she might still be stopped from running for Labour in the general election. This has caused anger among some of Starmer's allies and the party's left-wing. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn thinks Abbott was treated badly by Labour bosses. There's talk of giving Abbott back the whip if she doesn't run for Labour, so she can leave politics with respect. The possibility of banning Abbott from running for Labour has caused a new conflict between Starmer's team and the party's left-wing. Abbott had to be an independent MP while they looked into her comments. She got a warning for behavior that was bad for the Labour Party. Starmer didn't say if Abbott can run for Labour in the next election. He said the NEC will decide that. Some people are upset with Starmer for how he handled Abbott's situation. They think he should let her run as a Labour candidate. The Guardian reported that Starmer's close allies might be chosen as candidates in safe seats.
