Homeland Security Investigations, Italy’s Culture Ministry, and Carabinieri art squad worked together to show Italy's efforts to recover stolen antiquities. These items were taken by tomb raiders and sold to dealers who then resold them to buyers, auction houses, and museums. The U.S. is helping return these stolen items to Italy out of respect for its cultural heritage. They are also monitoring Ukraine for potential art trafficking. One famous piece, the “Victorious Youth” statue, is part of a legal dispute between Italy and the Getty Museum. The European Court of Human Rights supported Italy's claim that the statue was illegally taken from Italy. The investigation is ongoing to determine when or if the statue will be returned. A valuable coin worth $500,000 was found in New York during an investigation into a British coin dealer. Other stolen items were also recovered from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The recovered artifacts date back to the second century and include a bronze figure, bronze heads, and Etruscan vases. Homeland Security and Italian authorities are working together to combat looting of antiquities. They believe that any items taken illegally, whether through excavations or thefts, constitute looting. They are vigilant in protecting these historical artifacts and preventing further thefts.
