Ecuador seeks diplomatic resolution with Mexico 2 months after embassy raid
- Ecuador is ready to re-establish communication with Mexico after police raid on Mexican embassy.
- The diplomatic rift between Ecuador and Mexico is being addressed after almost 2 months.
- Efforts are being made to find a solution to the situation.
After police went into the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, Ecuador wants to talk to Mexico to fix the problem. The Ecuadorian Foreign Minister said they are ready to talk, but they want their former Vice President, Jorge Glas, to be released from prison first. He was taken from the embassy by the police. Mexico said they might ask Switzerland for help. The raid made many countries mad at Ecuador, so they complained to the International Court of Justice. The embassy is like foreign land, so police usually can't go in without permission. Glas was living at the embassy because he was on parole, but then a judge said he had to go back to prison. The two countries are now looking for a third country to help protect the embassies and move officials' things. Ecuadorians have been moving to the U.S. more because they can't find jobs or feel safe in Ecuador. About 2.4 million Ecuadorians live outside their country, which is more than 10% of the population. Last year, over 123,000 Ecuadorians didn't come back from their trips, and around 120,000 were stopped at the U.S.-Mexico border. The government is trying to solve the main problems: security, jobs, and education.
